Do’s & Don’ts of Wedding Registries

One great thing about a reception, is getting all the gifts you need and registered for. Registering for gifts is fun for you, boring for him, but completely necessary when you need to get the things you absolutely need such as china, blenders, and knives. In the spirit of Reception Thursday, we're going to give you a list of Do's and Don'ts when it comes to registering for your wedding.

Do's:

  • Register as a couple
  • Register ahead of time. About 4-6 weeks before the wedding
  • Give yourself time to explore your favorite stores. This can be online or in store but be absolutely sure that the item is exactly what you want.
  • Read the fine print. Make sure that the store will ship to your preferred address and learn about their exchange policies.
  • Register for enough stuff. Register for more items than you have guests so that they have enough to choose from or they can choose from individual items instead of sets.
  • Review the registry. Every few weeks check back with your registry and use the updated list when writing thank you notes.
  • Register for what you want. Traditionally it was all china and other household items but if you two are an outdoor couple that loves camping, register for a tent if you wish.

Don'ts:

  • No money gifts. This is so taboo but some financial registeries allow couples to ask for stock or financial assistance with their honeymoon. Still, it's a little tacky.
  • Register for stuff you don't need. Ask yourself this question: Can I live without this item? When I'm contemplating a purchase I take a picture and look at it the next day, if I still love it and want it, then it gets bought.
  • Go over anyone's budget. That $500 china may look beautiful but registering above your means is rude and means guests won't buy what you registered for.
  • Limit your stores. Registering at only 1 or 2 stores is a no-no. At least 3 is ideal and one should be a brick and mortar that all guests have access to.
  • Advertise it on invitations. That information can be saved for your wedding website or social meda.
  • You don't get what you want. It's like Christmas, you won't get everything you asked for, that's unrealistic. Leave your registry open for when other joyous occasions arrive.
  • Check the registry before your shower. That's rude and there is an element of surprise. But after you can to begin writing thank you notes.

No matter what, stay within your means and don't go crazy registering for everything you see. Again, this is a great way to get everything you need but remember to be gracious and thankful for everything.

Happy Planning,

Tat
