Studio Reel-2013 from Hakim Sons Films-Dallas HD Films on Vimeo.
Thank you to Shannon Jenkins at Hakim Sons Films for answering this week's reader question:
How do I know which videographer to choose for my wedding day? Are there any specific questions to ask?
While there are many things that will factor into choosing a videographer/filmmaker (i.e. budget, chemistry, experience) the biggest thing to focus on is the style of the storyteller. To help you identify a filmmaker with the style that complements your celebrations, we've created a few questions for you to consider:
- Do you like how they capture the moments?
- Do they use spoken word, licensed music, cinematic editing, and color grading?
- Have you had a chance to view a good mix of their films so that you can gauge the overall style of their work?
- Will your wedding film be unique to you, while including their stylistic editing and storytelling approach?
- Make sure to ask potential videographers, "How will you tell our story?" It's important for you to understand what components a videographer plans to include in your wedding film.

You can get answers to some of these questions by doing research, getting recommendations from other brides you know or vendors in the industry. Testimonials are a great way to establish a track record of the artist.
Make sure the videographer is asking you questions as well. They should know how you met, how you fell in love, and what is going to make your day special. You want to make sure your videographer is taking the time to get to know you and your unique wedding.
Another question to make sure you ask is turnaround time. While a quality video takes time to produce once the cake is eaten and guests have gone home, you also want to make sure they don't need anything from you before they can begin editing. Make sure you have realistic expectations from each other. While a same-day edit or next-day edit can be showcased and ready for viewing at the reception or morning-after brunch, a quality film may take months to produce.
Overall, make sure you are happy and comfortable with everything your filmmaker is offering. Ask questions and be specific. After all, this is a film you can showcase to your kids and grandkids someday!
